What's the process to get a battery installed?

Schedule a free 20-minute design consultation with an Emporia Expert to review system options. Afterward, you'll receive a proposal with at least two options to review. Once you review the contract and pay the refundable deposit, our installer will schedule a remote or on-site visit to confirm your final price and timeline. After the installer gets permits and installs the system, the Emporia team will host a Walkthrough Call with you to explain the battery's settings, complete the program enrollment, and ensure that you're comfortable with your new battery's operation. The entire process takes approximately 3 months from the date of the deposit to the Walkthrough Call.

How does the GMP BYOD rebate work?

If you enroll a battery for ten years, GMP will give you an upfront payment of $850 per kW of storage enrolled for three hour discharge, $950 per kW for four hour discharge. If you’re retrofitting an existing solar system in one of the areas of the state where extra storage will help the grid most, GMP will give you an extra $100 per kW. Plus, you get the benefit of knowing your device is helping to cut carbon emissions and costs for all GMP customers!

Am I still eligible for the 30% Federal Tax Credit?

As of 2023, battery storage technology is considered a qualified expense under the Residential Clean Energy Credit. If you are eligible, it is Emporia's opinion that the calculation for the 30% federal tax credit combined with GMP's BYOD rebate is as follows:
(Total Project Cost - GMP Rebate) * 30% = Eligible Tax Credit

Emporia or its employees are not tax professionals. Please contact your tax professional or the IRS for professional assistance regarding the ITC.

How long does it take to install?

Most battery projects are completed in 3 months from the day the deposit is paid to the final Walkthrough Call. Local housing jurisdictions, permit offices, utility companies and weather can impact the timeline. Our Electrification Experts will keep you updated on the progress of your project each step of the way.

Can I install (or manage the install) myself?

Yes, if you agree to our Self-Install Terms and complete our Installation Training, you can purchase the hardware from us directly and install it yourself. You assume all liability and responsibility if you decide to go this route. Book an appointment with our team and we can walk you through it.

What else do I need to know?

To receive the upfront rebate and continue to benefit from the program over time, you must have a working and reliable internet (Wifi) connection at the location of the battery system. GMP will pull energy from your battery during "Peak Events" which can occur 5 to 8 times per month at various times. They will do their utmost to alert you 4 hours before a peak event.
